Forms Design

Designing a great Form is an art form in itself. The mathematical precision, the clarity and simplicity of a great Form design is a skill that is mastered with a lot of practice, patience and determination.

25 years ago, when I started designing Forms, it was on an artboard, with a Rapidograph Pen, Swedish Ruling Pen, a bottle of Opaque, a great steel ruler with raised bottom, and painstaking hours of revisions and stat camera PMT's to meet the client's ever-changing thoughts.

"Let's add a line here, let's tighten up the space there...", it was gruelling, but the end result was truly a work of art. Always making sure you lifted the pen at the exact second you reached the end of the line to ensure square corners without any "blobs" or "thickening". I remember my dad, who was a printer, standing over me in college at my drafting table and critiquing every rule that had even the slightest waiver in it's weight. It was frustrating at the time, but in hindsight, it made me the "Forms Designer" that I am today and gave me a great passion for perfecting them.

Of course, only us seasoned veterans even have a clue of the painstaking efforts mentioned above, and today's Form Design is much easier and cleaner by comparison (not to mention editing).

There are several options for forms today. From basic simple database collection, to multi-page, complex forms that require thousands of mathematical equations to fit and shape them into their final form.

Some forms are old, have been photocopied a thousand times, and are barely legible. Some leave you 1 cm to fill in your phone number.
